• About Donegal Bioblitz

Donegal Bioblitz is organised by volunteers who live in the county and are active in biodiversity recording.

We set up the group in 2024 for the dual purpose of encouraging greater awareness of Donegal biodiversity among the general public, and creating a space where Donegal recorders can meet and 'geek out' :-) We actively engage with national biodiversity initiatives and contribute to recording schemes. And we aim to run a small number of targetted events that focus directly on recording in Donegal.

If you're active in biodiversity recording in Donegal, or would like to get started, we'd love to hear from you.

I've been a nature enthusiast since primary school. We had a brilliant teacher who took us outside on warm spring days and taught us the names of the plants, animals and birds. Growing up on a Donegal farm I was surrounded by so much biodiversity that I took for granted until I moved away and lived in a city for 15 years. Since returning, I've been taking full advantage of opportunities to delve deeply into the natural world that surrounds us. My absolute favourite thing to do is find a new stretch of road, or patch of woods, and explore for hours.

I’ve been recording birds and moths in Donegal for over 25 years and, in recent years, have branched out to other groups - pretty much anything that flies or crawls! I survey two squares in the county for the annual Countryside Bird Survey, and co-ordinate Irish Wetland Bird Survey counts on Donegal Bay. Living close to the Blue Stack mountains, I love walking, wild camping and recording nature in some of the wildest and most remote parts of the county.

  • Where we record & schemes

With our aim to contribute to a greater knowledge of biodiversity in Donegal, we take part in a number of biodiversity recording schemes.

    BirdWatch Ireland - Countryside Bird Survey - 3 squares - B9000, C010,

BirdWatch Ireland - Whooper Swan Survey (every 5 years)

BirdWatch Ireland - Irish Wetland Bird Survey - Donegal Bay

Biodiversity Ireland - Farm Month Monitoring Project

Biodiversity Ireland - Dragonfly Monitor - 2 sites: Meenagarranroe Bog & Trusk Lough

Alongside this, each year, we identify priority sites in Donegal and aim to record there at least once. For 2026 our priority sites are:

    Dooey Beach & Dunes

    Maghera Strand & Dunes

    Ard na Mona Woods

    Gortletteragh Woods, Stranorlar

Finally, we have a special focus on the 10km square we both live in. XXX.
